Many Leadership development opportunities are missed by doing the mundane and necessary activities alone. While I don’t advocate a “Tom Sawyer” approach to painting fences, I think it is a wasted opportunity when leaders paint by themselves. Whenever there is something to do, there should ALWAYS be one of your “next” leaders right there doing it with you. It gives you an opportunity to build a relationship, talk about upcoming minsitry and next steps in their growth as a leader.

One of my favorite learning enviroments for young leaders are events (camps, outreach events, corporate gatherings, etc.). What a great enviroment where planning, budgeting, contingencies, emergencies, ranks of people contributing and other variables come together in a place of heightened expectation for delivery. It is in this enviroment where great “pressure learning” can take place between a Leader and their Apprentices. In the graphic shown here, the Leader is standing in a position of support to the their Apprentice who is now doing “live leadership”. From this position the Leader can:
- coach
- encourage
- challenge
- warn
- process think together what next steps
- see things coming
- rebuke or correct
- step-in [only in case of an emergency]
- easily step back
- walk away [to let the Apprentice take on the full scale nature of the leadership challenge]
Over the next year I will be writing and developing more extensively concepts of Leadership Development using an apprenticeship model.
One of the things that most frustrates me is how just how many people “go through the motions” when it comes to getting the word out about their ministry or business. Too many just place the ad, write the script, pay for the sign, but don’t think through the real elements associated with making the message stick. I know I will write more on this in the future, but here is one of the best ads that i have seen on the subject the puts it so simply but poignantly. *** i am still trying to get a shirt from strawberry frog; they are all out! ***
There are MANY people who have contributed to my spiritual, personal and leadership development over the years. I am sure that my list here is will be incomplete initially, but this seems like the best post I can think of as I work on this leadership project.
Thank you to:
- Jen - patient and everything I want and need in my partner
- Central Christian Church
- Cal Jernigan - a great youth pastor who showed me Jesus
- The elders (over the years) - leaders of letting GRACE win the day when I deserved to be subjected to truth
- Deant Kuest - teaching me spiritual formation for ministry
- Danny Dodson - teaching me practical and relational insights for leading in a context beyond my natural inclinations
- Al Moore - a patient & generous friend; an exceptional balance to my raw edges over the years
- Rich Nichol - a friend who gave me hope for a transformed life + introduced me to the best spiritually renewing activity = mountain biking.
- Matt Adams - www.factor1studios.com - Our partnership on projects has made me better and allowed me to exercise my gifts in a different arena.
- Sid Pfaff - the first person who gave me a “how to grow in my leadership” type of book [the E-myth revisited].
- David Poole - generously investing in my leadership development.
