It has become apparent to me that every high caliber leader I see in action or hear teach has at least a handful of leadership axioms that they have refined over years of leadership. They reference them when interacting with others and can now attest to them from an experienced vantage point. While it is very important for young leaders to glean these insights from those further along in leadership, I think it is an equally beneficial exercise for us to start pesonalizing some for our own benefit.
Exercise = begin observing, thinking and writing about leadership from actual experiences in such a way that you can reduce leadership truths down to nuggets you can hold onto, practice and share with others.
Don’t be ashamed if you have to revise your conclusions, expand on them or even retract them as you get more experience. The most important part of the exercise will be the experience of heightened attention to leadership in practice and teaching which will ultimately refine your leadership.
