In leadership & in ministry, WHO you have influence you is a very key ingredient. It seems very wise & prudent to carefully select which voices you are going to allow to penetrate into your outlook, attitude, worldview, decision making and direction.
Over the last 8 months I have been refining which voices to have speak into my personal development, professional insights and ministry direction. I don’t have all of this work done yet, but I want to pass along two new voices that are making the cut.
the first is a pastor out in S.C. — for those of you in ministry you won’t find the revelatory — named Perry Noble. He pastors a church called NewSpring. Read his blog… it is worth the price of the subscription (FREE). The best take aways are spiritual leadership and then church leadership, in that order.
the second is a pastor in New York named Tim Keller. What he has been doing as a pastor of the local church is very good, but what he is contributing to the intellectual dialogue in the world on behalf of Christ and the gospel is outstanding. His lectures and sermons would be termed ‘boring’ by the average evangelical church attender on the west coast, but if you can hang with the deliver the content will leave you thinking for a very long time. Be sure to check out his lecture at Google.
I assume a good portion of you read our family blog as well, but just in case here is an update following ‘church planting assessment’. This is an unusual season of being ‘in-between’, however, Strip Church & Factor 1 Studios are going very well.

these are the four questions that Jen & I have been wrestling with after we landed on it being time to take a next step in faith and ministry leadership.
[ miss something? past post 1 - 2 ]
as i noted in my last updated, we believe WHAT God has lead us to plant a new church. for those of you unfamiliar with the terminology, it means to start a brand new church (from scratch so to speak) in an area in need of God’s word and presence of his people.
since filling in this piece of the journey, we have been in the research/interview stage of selecting an organization to head out with. it is possible to just move somewhere and get going, but this is a very, very difficult way to start a church. in this modern era, there are christian organizations that specialize in starting brand new churches by partnering with mission minded churches and pastors. so we have been looking for WHO we would go with and now have a peace about our new relationship with the ORCHARD GROUP. I could write several blogs about why we have selected this organization as our lead partner, but let me summarize it simply by saying “we fit in” with them. they have incredible leadership (Paul Williams & Brent Storms), an eye for developing top notch partners, an aim for attracting high caliber lead pastors and a determination to focus on the essentials (+ they are pretty cool cats).
now what most of you have been waiting for—> WHERE are we going and WHEN are we going to be there? well…. you will have to wait a tad bit longer for that. i should be able to post info. on the WHEN some time next week, but as for the WHERE that probably won’t be answered until spring. check back here next wednesday and my next update should have something for you on these fronts.
thanks for your prayers and support.

It’s the new thing!
When I started this blog less than a year ago, I only had a rough idea of what I wanted to do – very experimental! As the months and posts have passed, I think I have a clue and thus, a brand new website for the articles and content. Check it out and stay connected.
*** This blog will continue to exist, but it will become the home of personal updates in my own leadership life, random thoughts and at times, possibly interesting debates. OR it could die from a lack of interest on my part to maintain it… not that anyone has every done that with their blogs before.
[this blog is soon finding a new home on RED BIKE LEADER.com - http://www.redbikeleader.com ]
how do you get back up after you are knocked down? if you don’t know, you are going to need to figure it out. maybe you won’t know until the situation arises. it has to be a NON-NEGOTIABLE ATTRIBUTE for leaders though. every leader will face at least one situation (probably many) in their lives where they will be knocked down to the mat, and like a fighter in the ring, you may lay there for a moment and seriously contemplate whether you are going to get back up again. you will mull over the possibilities in your life that might be nearly as rewarding without having the risk and pain involved that you are currently feeling. you will need to search deep for what drives you, inspires you, and pushes you to be in the arena you are in. you may need a coach in your corner that believes in you; he might be yelling in your ear. a damsel (or dame) may be just beyond on the ropes believing in you and you can’t let them down. perhaps you are a believer in God and you rely soley on the strength and the promises that he gives in his word. maybe it is a combination. maybe it is in your gut and your experiences to keep on fighting. chances are that you want to undo the past and not replicate other failures you have seen.
we have all witnessed defeat. most of us know people who have lost a business, a house, a relationship, a loved one, a trusting confidant OR we have gone through something ourselves. LEADERS GET UP OFF THE MAT!
